Your teeth can last for a lifetime, but that does not always happen for everyone. In fact, 35 million Americans do not have any remaining natural teeth. If you are among those who have lost all their natural teeth, you have probably given dentures a try. Although you had high expectations for them to feel natural, you are disappointed with the results. What if you could enjoy the next best thing to what nature gave you? Now you can with implant-retained dentures in Houston. Dr. John H. Krell will rebuild your smile using a solution that can last for a lifetime.

How Do Implant-Retained Dentures Work?

Several innovations over the years have improved the fit and aesthetics of traditional dentures. They are held to your gum tissue using suction or an adhesive, so you can chew, smile, and speak with ease. Unfortunately, there will always be some limitations to their fit and comfort. You will deal with slipping or irritation at some point.

Implant-supported dentures resolve these issues. An average of 4 to 8 implant posts are strategically placed into your jawbone to support each denture. The dentures themselves will look just like the traditional ones, but they will have several advantages that are not possible with suction or an adhesive.

Am I a Candidate for Implant-Retained Dentures?

The long-term success of dental implants relies on your jawbone’s ability to support the posts. As a result, you cannot get them if you have any oral health, medical, or lifestyle factors that impact your body’s ability to heal or fight infections. Generally, if you have good dental and overall health, you are a candidate for them. Dr. Krell performs a comprehensive examination and takes a CT scan to ensure they are right for you.

The Implant-Retained Dentures Procedure

Your procedure will consist of multiple stages to ensure the success of your smile. After your consultation and you have healed from any additional procedures, like bone grafting, you are scheduled for your placement surgery.

Your gum tissue is opened to expose your jawbone to strategically place dental implants into it, and then it is sutured closed. The posts stimulate your jaw to promote new bone growth. This allows your jawbone to fuse to the posts through a process called osseointegration.

After your jaw heals, special connector pieces are placed onto each post, called abutments. These are necessary to attach your denture. In some cases, we may be able to fit you with a temporary denture the same day as your placement surgery.
